AMERICAN SYMBOLS

COMPUTER CENTER:

  • Check for useful pictures and information you can present to the class from various multimedia encyclopedias.
  • Search the internet to collect facts and graphics that are useful for young children.
  • Teacher copy some of the pictures to an editing program such as Paint or Word where the picture can be labeled and enlarged. (Check copyrights.)
  • Print and laminate the pictures to use on the bulletin board or in the writing center.
  • Save the useful material on a disk. (Check copyrights.)
That way you will have the graphics and useful information the moment you are ready to use them.
Just pop the disk into your classroom computer.
Start a collection of disk with graphics and facts for each unit you teach.
  • Use the list below as a starting point for useful Internet Sites.
  • Make a slideshow presentation using Power Point or Kid Pix with some of the graphics you saved.
  • Use the slideshow to illustrate the facts you are teaching about the flag, Statue of Liberty, etc.

STUDENTS USING THE COMPUTER TO REINFORCE READING READINESS SKILLS
AND LEARN FACTS ABOUT AMERICAN SYMBOLS:

Numerous methods are used to teach and reinforce letter recognition and phonetic sounds. The methods are varied day to day depending on the children's progress through out the year. The method is not important. The fact that the children do some writing using phonics every day is important.
The following are examples of just a few methods for teaching letter recognition and phonetic sounds.
Students use a drawing program such as Kid Pix or Paint to draw and label pictures of American Symbols.
Teacher put students' pictures into a slideshow using Kid Pix or Power Point.
Students tell one important fact about their slide.
After the slideshow has been viewed over and over, the students learn to read all of the labels.

Through this process the students are learning to write and recognize words, relate sounds with letters, write and read from left to right, write and read from top to bottom and copy words from a page onto a computer.
Students are also learning computer skills.
Plus, facts about American symbols are reinforced.
