BODY UNIT
READING READINESS
AND MATH ACTIVITIES

GETTING READY:

  • BOOKS:   
    Gather non-fiction and fiction books about the body.
    These can be displayed in the reading center for viewing by the students and used for oral reading by the teacher.
  • VIDEOS
    Gather videos about the body and its' systems.
    These can be viewed in ten minute segments when you are discussing a specific system.
  • PICTURES:
    Gather pictures of the body, heart, bones, etc.
    These can be labeled,  mounted on construction paper and laminated.
    Students can use these in the writing or art center.
    The teacher can use these when teaching about a specific part of the body.
  • POSTERS:
    Display posters showing the systems of the body.
  • MODELS:
    Display plastic models of a skeleton, heart, human body, eye, etc.
  • DOCTOR'S OFFICE:
    Set up a play area with real doctor clothes, nurses clothes, Band-Aids, real stethoscopes, toy doctors' bag, blankets, dolls ...
  • SCIENCE CENTER:
    Display plastic models of the body, bones, blood vessels, etc.
    Have several magnifying glasses set out.
    Set up a microscope for viewing pond water and blood.
    Display a real cast discarded from someone's' broken bone.
    Add some real animal bones from a steak or chicken.
    Put out any animal skeletons that you can collect over the years. We have the skeleton  of a frog, a bird, some pig ribs, plus the skull of a beaver.
    Display some real x-rays. (Our x-ray machine is a small beer commercial light with the beer commercial removed.  We got it from a beer company.)
